Common faults

Signs your boiler needs a repair

Most boiler faults announce themselves. If yours is doing any of these, ring before it gets worse.

No heating or hot water

Anything from a failed part to a timer that's been knocked. We find out which, and fix it.

Pressure dropped

If you're topping up the pressure every few days, water is escaping somewhere. It needs finding before it does damage.

A fault code on the display

Tell us the code when you ring. It won't always pin down the fault, but it usually points the right way.

Banging, gurgling or kettling

Noises usually mean air in the system, a pump on its way out, or scale building up inside the boiler.

Water leaking or dripping

If water is getting near anything electrical, turn the boiler off, then ring. Leaks rarely fix themselves.

Keeps locking out

A boiler that shuts itself down is protecting itself from something. Resetting it over and over won't fix the cause.

What happens next

How a repair works

  1. Ring or text

Call 07939 129 771 and tell us what the boiler is doing, the make, and any fault code on the display.

  2. We book you in

[Typical response time, for example same day or next day when you've no heating.]

  3. We find the fault

We diagnose the problem, explain it in plain English, and give you the price before any work starts.

  4. Fixed and tested

Once it's repaired, we test the boiler and run safety checks before we leave.

Before you ring

A few quick checks

Some breakdowns turn out to be a setting or a frozen pipe. These are all safe to check yourself, and if none of them sorts it, you'll have useful information for when you ring.

Never take the casing off the boiler. Anything inside it is a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Worth checking first

  • Does the hob light? If not, the problem may be the gas supply or a prepayment meter, not the boiler.
  • Are the thermostat and timer set properly? Batteries die and clocks change.
  • What does the pressure gauge say? Most boilers want roughly 1 to 1.5 bar when cold. Your manual shows how to top it up.
  • In a cold snap, the condensate pipe outside can freeze. Warm water (not boiling) poured along it usually thaws it.
  • Press reset once. If it locks out again, leave it and ring us.

Honest advice

Repair or replace?

Most boilers are worth repairing, and we'll always look at fixing yours first. But there comes a point where you're paying to keep something going that's near the end, and we'd rather tell you that than keep taking your money.

If a new boiler makes more sense, we'll explain why and price both options, so you can decide.

It might be time for a new boiler if

  • It's more than 12 to 15 years old
  • It has broken down more than once this year
  • Parts for it are hard to get or no longer made
  • The repair would cost a big chunk of a new boiler

Questions

Boiler repair FAQs

How much does a boiler repair cost?

It depends on the fault and the part. We'll tell you the price before any work starts. [Owner to confirm: call-out or diagnosis charge, if any.]

Do you charge a call-out fee?

[Owner to confirm.]

Which boiler makes do you repair?

All the main makes, including Worcester Bosch, Baxi, Viessmann and Vaillant. If yours is something less common, ring and ask.

Can you come out today?

[Owner to confirm typical availability, and whether households with no heating or vulnerable people are prioritised.]

My boiler pressure keeps dropping. What does that mean?

Usually water is escaping somewhere: a leak in the pipework or a radiator, a pressure relief valve letting by, or an expansion vessel that has lost its charge. Topping it up will get you through the evening, but if you're doing it every few days it needs looking at.

Is it worth repairing an old boiler?

Often, yes. If parts are still available and it hasn't been breaking down regularly, a repair is usually the cheaper option. If it's getting on, keeps failing, or the part costs a big chunk of a new boiler, we'll say so and price both.

What should I do if I smell gas?

Leave the boiler alone and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999, day or night. Open doors and windows, don't use light switches or anything that could spark, and turn the gas off at the meter if you can do it safely.
